Education of Psychology

I believe we all can learn from other people's life experiences. What better way than to share your thoughts and experiences than through the internet?

My name is Marilyn Cardona and I am a Graduate Student at the City College of New York, studying Childhood Education.

This blog has been created to express my Educational Psychology and to hopefully receive feedback on your personal views and theories.

I find myself leaning towards this idea process. Life is about adapting and accommodating knowledge into your own personal life. It is the ability to be aware of your own information and knowing how to improve your learning. Teachers are life coaches, they guide and can assist in organizing all these thoughts to encourage indepedent thinking.

Motivation

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation

Motivation, something that provokes behavior. As educators, that is probably one of our main goals--to motivate our students to their maximum potential. However, as we all know, each child is unique has varied interests and dislikes that go against our motivational attempts.

The consensus seems to be that one must be intrinsically motivated to achieve optimal results. The internal desire to preform a particualr job does have its benefits. However, one must not discount the extrinsically motivtaed. They have a way of seeing the world differently and are our artists and musicians!

Educational Theories

Behavioral perspective is a set of techniques based on the behavioral principles of operant conditioning. For example, teachers can alter student behavior by systematically rewarding students who follow classroom rules with praise, stars, or tokens exchangeable for sundry items.

Cognitive perspective claim that memory structures determine how information is perceived, processed, stored, retrieved and forgotten.

Developmental perspective is defined as human cognitive competence at successive phases of development. Education aims to help students acquire knowledge and develop skills which are compatible with their understanding and problem-solving capabilities at different ages.

Social cognitive perspective is the process of observational learning in which a learner's behavior changes as a result of observing others' behavior and its consequences.

Constructivist perspective is a category of learning theory in which emphasis is placed on the agency and prior "knowing" and experience of the learner, and often on the social and cultural determinants of the learning process.

My personal view

I personally feel that I lean towards the behaviorist and social cognition perspective. I believe that praise and positive acknowledgment can boost a child’s’ self esteem which in turn opens up their minds further to the material.

I also feel their social space/environment profoundly affects a child’s learning ability. The process of observational learning, in which a learner's behavior changes as a result of observing others' behavior and its consequences, happens all the time and all around us.

We learn from others and teachers are environmental stimuli that further the childs' knowledge. Teachers aid in organizing all those ideas with them. We give them the tools necessary to become independent thinkers.

Piaget & Vygostky

Piaget's idea was that children learn through action. He believed that children are born with and acquire schemas, or concepts for how to act and respond to the world. As children explore their world, they form and reform ideas in their minds. The more actively involved children are, the more knowledge is gained.

The Vygotskian perspective of literacy acquisition emphasizes social interaction but places less emphasis on stages of behavior. From this perspective, language and cognition emerge in development at about the same time and are intertwined. Children build new concepts by interacting with others who either provide feedback for their hypotheses or help them accomplish a task.

These two gentlemen's ideas are thought provoking. Each have their own merits. Children are an open book and capture so much information from the moment of birth. They are like mini computers. It is quite possible that information was preloaded onto infants. However, at the same time, learning through social intractions is key, as it develops problem solving skills.

Brain Development / Intelligence

The first three years of life are a period of incredible growth in all areas of a baby's development. A newborn's brain is about 25 percent of its approximate adult weight. But by age 3, it has grown dramatically by producing billions of cells and hundreds of trillions of connections, or synapses, between these cells.

The brain is the most important part of our being. It is the command center of our lives. As early as birth, we have been learning and adpating to the world around us.

Our intelligence can be attributed to many factors. Through social interactions, your predeposition, your genetic makeup...it all plays a part in creating a complex you.

Our brain and intelligence allow us to remember key aspects that are essential to our lives. These memories are stored within our brain, which is always accomodating more information.

Communication

Communication is key!! As well as having great listening skills!! Our students /children are extremely perceptive and know when an adult is not fully paying attention to them. They decipher those codes at a very early age. Body language and tone of voice are imbedded into their/our psyche. From the infant stage, we have been decoding clues of communication. We are practically experts.

Communicating effectively to my students is a technique I hope to master. Children have so much expression, we must be there to capture those moments and to lend a genuine ear whenever possible.
